A laser cutter is precise, but “precise” only helps if the material you feed it behaves the way the design expects. Here’s what actually works for earring and hair clip designs, and what wastes your time.
Wood — the most forgiving choice
3mm birch plywood is the standard for a reason: clean edges, no warping, and it takes wood-burn detailing beautifully if your design has fine linework. Basswood cuts even cleaner but costs more and is harder to find in small sheets.
Best for: earrings and clips with fine internal detail (leaves, animals, lettering).
Acrylic — for color and shine
Cast acrylic cuts with a polished, glass-like edge straight off the laser — no sanding needed. Extruded acrylic is cheaper but leaves a slightly frosted edge. For jewelry, that edge finish matters more than it does for signage, so cast is worth the extra cost.
Best for: bold color pieces, translucent or glitter designs, anything meant to catch light.
Faux leather — soft, wearable, and light
Cuts clean with no sealed/melted edge the way real leather sometimes gets. Much lighter than wood or acrylic, which matters for larger statement earrings that would otherwise pull on ears.
Best for: large dangle earrings, layered designs where weight adds up fast.
Setting your cutter: don’t guess, test a scrap first
Every laser is calibrated differently, and settings that work on one machine’s 3mm birch can scorch another’s. Cut a 1-inch test square in a scrap corner before running the full sheet — checking edge color (light tan, not black char) and clean cut-through in under thirty seconds saves you an entire ruined sheet.
A word on file scale
Our SVG/DXF files are sized to the listed finished dimension already — no need to scale up “for the seam allowance” the way you might with fabric patterns. If your cutter software shows a different size on import, check the units setting (mm vs. inches) before adjusting the file itself.
